APPLICATION OF SERICHLOR FOR DISINFECTION IN SERICULTURE
 

Disinfection of rearing house and appliance

Based on the observation of the results of in vitro and in vivo studies, Serichlor- 60/ Serichlor-20 (500 ppm ) in 0.5% slaked lime solution was verified for effectiveness in disinfection of silkworm rearing house and appliances. The silkworm rearing house and appliances were made contaminated with silkworm pathogens and the disinfectant was sprayed @ 1.5 ltr/ sq. met floor area. The appliances such as rearing trays were disinfected by spraying Serichlor solution @ 25ml/ sq. ft surface area. The rearing house and appliances kept exposed for different duration of time to determine the time required for effectiveness. The results were very effective. 

Disinfection of silkworm egg surface

Serichlor ( 500 ppm) -slaked lime (0.5%) solution was tested as surface disinfectant against egg surface contamination of silkworm eggs. Eggs were dipped in the solution for 10 minutes and shade dried. The effect of egg surface disinfection on the viability and economic characters of silkworm was very effective.

                                                               
FEW HAZARDS OF USAGE OF SERICHLOR

Serichlor , has low toxicity and is effective even at broad pH ranges. It is non hazardous to human and domestic animals. It does not form chlorinated organic by products as well as carcinogenic trihalomethanes as done by Chlorine, bad tasting chlorophenols or chloramines as does Chlorine. It is not known to act as a toxin to microbial pathogen and as such the microbial resistance is not expected to develop. Unlike Ozone, it is also known to provide residual protection. It is stable and may be activated at the time of its use. It possesses tolerable odour and comparatively least corrosiveness . At the suggested concentration Serichlor (500 ppm Serichlor + slaked lime solution) was found less corrosive than bleaching powder  (30% chlorine ) of 2% in 0.3% slaked lime solution. The solution does not affect wood and cloth. Serichlor is not affected by pH or ammonia; and requires only short treatment duration and thus has less effect on  system operations. Serichlor  can be stored, transported and used  without any special consideration.  Several applications including disinfection and deoderisation of animal confinement (1000 ppm ), treatment of stored potable drinking water (5ppm ), treatment of all food contact surfaces (200 ppm) and sensitizing rinse, not requiring water flush of all food contact surfaces in food processing plants (100ppm ).

The disadvantages are associated with the Serichlor in gaseous state. It includes its severe respiratory and eye irritant activity. It may explosively decompose on shock, friction , concussion, or rapid heating. The strong oxidant reacts violently with combustible and reducing materials, with mercury, ammonia, sulphur, and many organic compounds.

ANTIDOTES

The following antidotes and first-aid procedures may be followed. If eyes are effected, flush eyes thoroughly with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Flush the skin with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. If ingested, do not induce vomiting. Wash mouth with water. If inhaled, remove victim from exposure to fresh air immediately. If victim is not breathing, give artificial respiration. If victim's breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Effective ventilation, safety glasses, face shield and gloves are essential.
